How to Verify a Refurbished Apple Watch Is Genuine
Clone Apple Watches are more common than clone iPhones — the small size makes counterfeits cheaper to produce. When buying refurbished, especially from marketplaces, use these five checks.
1. Serial number lookup
Every genuine Apple Watch has a serial visible in Settings → General → About. Enter it at checkcoverage.apple.com. Apple returns the exact model, activation date and warranty status. A serial that doesn't resolve is a red flag.
2. Weight test
Fakes are almost always lighter. A Series 8 45mm aluminium weighs 38.8g; a stainless steel equivalent weighs 51.5g. If your unit feels noticeably lighter than the spec, it's suspect.
3. Haptic engine
Genuine Apple Watches have a crisp, tight taptic engine. Clones use a cheap vibration motor that sounds buzzy. Trigger a haptic by tapping the crown twice — you should feel a single sharp tap, not a hum.
4. Display behaviour
- True Retina panel: perfectly black off-pixels, no backlight bleed at the edges
- Always-on display works even when the wrist is down (Series 5+)
- Force Touch responds only when firmly pressed, not on light contact
5. Pairing flow
When you pair a genuine watch, your iPhone shows an animated blue nebula and asks for the pairing code shown on the watch. Clones skip this and behave like a generic Bluetooth device.
Extra: iCloud Activation Lock
Before you buy anywhere, ask the seller to fully reset the watch in front of you or over video. When you pair it to your iPhone, no previous Apple ID should be requested. If one is — the watch is locked and cannot be used.
