How to Verify a Genuine Refurbished iPhone (Not a Counterfeit or Refurb-Scam)

Counterfeit iPhones are a real problem in some Gulf and CIS markets. Here are the checks every buyer should do — IMEI, serial, Face ID, parts warning, and more.

How to Verify a Genuine Refurbished iPhone

Grey-market shops in some Middle Eastern and CIS marketplaces sell "refurbished" iPhones that are actually cloned housings around cheaper Android hardware, or genuine iPhones with swapped non-Apple parts (screens, batteries, cameras). Here is how to protect yourself.

1. Check the IMEI on Apple's own database

Every genuine iPhone has an IMEI printed on the SIM tray and shown in Settings → General → About. Enter it at checkcoverage.apple.com — Apple's servers will confirm:

  • Model and storage
  • Purchase date and warranty status
  • Whether Find My has been unlocked

If Apple's site returns "invalid IMEI" — the device is not a real iPhone.

2. Face ID / Touch ID must work

Cloned iPhones almost never replicate Face ID correctly. If Face ID fails to enrol, or takes more than 2 seconds to recognise your face, treat it as suspect.

3. Look for the "unknown part" warning

Open Settings → General → About and scroll to the bottom. On a genuine iPhone with all-original Apple parts you'll see nothing unusual. If a screen, battery or camera has been replaced with a non-Apple part you'll see a message like "Unknown Part". Every Furbishmarket phone is either fully original or uses genuine Apple service parts.

4. Camera and lidar sensors

Open the Camera app and test:

  • Portrait mode on Pro / Pro Max models — depth blur should react in real time.
  • Night mode should activate automatically in low light.
  • Video should record in Dolby Vision HDR on iPhone 12 and newer.

Clones fail all three tests.

5. Boot logo and OS

The Apple boot logo should be crisp white on a pure black background. On startup, iOS should ask you to sign in with an Apple ID; if the device skips this or shows an unusual welcome screen, walk away.

Why buy from a UK refurbisher?

UK refurbishers operate under strict trading standards, VAT invoicing and consumer protection law. Every Furbishmarket iPhone is IMEI-checked against Apple's database, fully diagnosed on 45+ points, and shipped with the original diagnostic report.
