eSIM vs Physical SIM: What Works in the Gulf and Russia

Apple has quietly turned SIM strategy into a minefield for international buyers. Depending on which country's model you buy, the same iPhone 14 or 15 will either work perfectly on your local network — or refuse to accept a SIM at all.

If you are ordering a refurbished iPhone from the UK to the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Russia, this guide tells you exactly which model to pick.

The three SIM configurations you will see

1. Physical nano-SIM + eSIM — standard UK, EU and Middle East retail models. One physical SIM slot plus one or more eSIMs. 2. Dual physical nano-SIM — Hong Kong and mainland China models. Two physical slots, no eSIM support on most models. 3. eSIM only, no SIM tray — US models of iPhone 14, 15 and 16. No physical slot at all.

Why this matters for your region

UAE (Etisalat / du)

Both Etisalat and du support eSIM on postpaid and most prepaid plans. An eSIM-only US iPhone will work, but you need to visit a store or use the carrier app to provision the eSIM — you cannot just insert a SIM you already have. UK models with physical + eSIM are the safest choice because you can swap your existing nano-SIM in and go.

Saudi Arabia (STC / Mobily / Zain)

STC and Mobily support eSIM. Zain rolled out eSIM later and coverage on prepaid tourist plans is patchy. If you travel between Saudi and other Gulf states with multiple SIMs, a UK physical + eSIM model gives you the most flexibility.

Russia (MTS / MegaFon / Beeline / Tele2 / Yota)

This is where it gets serious. As of 2026, eSIM support in Russia is limited and inconsistent. MTS and MegaFon offer eSIM in major cities; Beeline and Tele2 are catching up but many regional branches still cannot provision one. Tourist and short-term prepaid SIMs are almost always physical nano-SIM.

For Russia, do not buy a US eSIM-only iPhone 14, 15 or 16. You will not be able to activate a local number without a trip to a flagship store in Moscow or St Petersburg — and even then, not on every operator. Buy the UK or EU model with the physical SIM tray.

How to tell which model you are being sold

Ask the seller for the model number on the back of the box or in Settings → General → About → Model Number. The first letters tell you:

• A2xxx / A3xxx followed by a suffix — check Apple's identify your iPhone page
• LL/A = US model (eSIM only on 14/15/16)
• B/A = UK model (physical + eSIM) ✅ best for Gulf & Russia
• ZA/A = Hong Kong model (dual physical SIM)
• RU/A = Russian retail model (physical + eSIM)
