What Does Grade A, B and C Mean on a Refurbished Phone?

A plain-English explanation of refurbished phone grades (A, B, C and Pristine) — what each grade looks like and which is the best value.

What Does Grade A, B and C Mean on a Refurbished Phone?

Refurbished phone grades describe cosmetic condition only. Functionality, battery health and warranty should be identical across grades — only the looks differ. Here's what each grade really means.

Pristine / Like New

The phone is visually indistinguishable from new under normal inspection. No marks on the screen, no marks on the frame. Often comes in fresh packaging. Expect to pay around 90–95% of a Grade A price.

Grade A — Excellent

The most popular grade. May have:

  • Tiny micro-scratches on the screen, invisible when the screen is on
  • Faint marks on the frame, invisible from arm's length

For most people, Grade A looks new in everyday use. Best value-for-money grade.

Grade B — Good

Light but visible signs of use:

  • Visible micro-scratches on the screen, not deep
  • Small marks, nicks or rub-wear on the frame or back
  • No cracks, no dents

Functionality is identical to Grade A. Save 10–20% over Grade A. Ideal if you use a case anyway.

Grade C — Fair

Clearly used:

  • Deeper scratches, possibly small chips on the frame
  • Possibly minor dents
  • Screen and body fully functional, no cracks affecting use

Save 25–35% over Grade A. Great for kids' phones, work phones or as a backup.

What grading does NOT mean

A common myth is that lower grades have worse internals or shorter battery life. That's not true with a reputable refurbisher. Every grade should:

  • Pass the same diagnostic tests
  • Meet the same battery health minimum
  • Carry the same warranty length
  • Be fully unlocked

If a seller drops warranty or testing for lower grades, buy elsewhere.

Which grade is right for you?

  • You hate any visible wear: Pristine
  • You want new looks at the best price: Grade A
  • You always use a case: Grade B (best value)
  • Cost is everything: Grade C
