Inside the Workshop: How We Refurbish iPads

A step-by-step look at the 32-point inspection, battery test, deep clean and factory reset every iPad passes before it earns a Furbishmarket warranty.

Inside the Workshop: How We Refurbish Every iPad

When someone asks "what does refurbished actually mean?" the honest answer is: it depends who you buy from. A refurbished iPad from a garage on Facebook Marketplace and one from our Haverhill workshop are two completely different products.

Here is exactly what happens between an iPad arriving on our bench and it landing on your doorstep.

Step 1 — Intake & serial audit

Every iPad is logged by serial number and checked against Apple's activation database and the UK CheckMEND stolen-goods register. If a device is iCloud locked, blacklisted, or has been reported lost, it never makes it to Step 2.

Step 2 — Full factory reset

We wipe the device using Apple's DFU restore process — not a simple "Erase All Content and Settings." This guarantees the previous owner's data, accounts, and installed profiles are unrecoverable. You always receive an iPad set up exactly as if it left the Apple Store today.

Step 3 — The 32-point diagnostic

Our technicians run through a checklist covering:

  • Touch response across the entire screen
  • Dead pixels, backlight bleed, image retention
  • Wi-Fi 2.4 & 5GHz throughput
  • Bluetooth pairing and audio latency
  • Front & rear camera, focus, flash, mics
  • Speakers (all four on Pro models), haptics
  • Face ID / Touch ID enrolment and matching
  • Charging port stability, wireless charging where supported
  • Volume, power and mute switches
  • Apple Pencil hover, tilt and pressure
  • Cellular signal on all supported bands (where fitted)
  • GPS lock time and accuracy

Any iPad that fails a single point is repaired or downgraded. It never gets sold as Grade A.

Step 4 — Battery health test

We read the raw battery health via Apple's service diagnostics, not the consumer-facing "Battery Health" screen (which iPads don't even show). Any cell below 85% design capacity is replaced with a new, genuine-spec battery. Every device is charged to full and left overnight to check for parasitic drain.

Step 5 — Screen & housing

Minor scuffs are polished. Deep scratches on the screen mean a full assembly replacement. Any dented or bent chassis is scrapped — bent iPads never bond properly with a new screen and always fail long-term.

Step 6 — Deep clean & sanitise

Ultrasonic cleaning of the housing, cotton-bud detail work on the ports and speakers, alcohol wipe-down of the screen, and a final anti-bacterial pass. You should not be able to tell it wasn't new.

Step 7 — 48-hour burn-in

Every iPad runs a 48-hour test loop — video playback, Wi-Fi transfer, Bluetooth audio and light gaming — to catch intermittent faults that a five-minute check would miss.

Step 8 — Repack & warranty registration

The iPad ships in a plain protective box with a new certified Apple-compatible charger and cable. The serial number is registered against our 12-month warranty database before it leaves the building.

Why it matters

A cheap "refurbished" iPad from an unbranded seller usually means: wiped, wiped again if you're lucky, and shipped. That's why they cost £40 less — and why they fail six months later with no one to call.

Everything we sell is inspected by a human, in the UK, with a receipt, a warranty, and a phone number that a real person answers.
